Wix Ecommerce vs Shopify – How To Build An Online Store

How To Build An Online Store -Wix Ecommerce vs Shopify

Wix eCommerce and Shopify comparison almost sounds absurd, but eyes can be deceiving. Wix ecommerce is probably one of the hidden gems of e-commerce in the rise and dominance of Shopify.

Between you and me, If I was asked which platform I would go for if I was building an e-commerce store- Believe it or not Shopify would have been my choice.

However having been bombarded with Wix eCommerce store questions from our friends and website visitors who are looking into starting a website so I decided to take a pause and ask why Wix eCommerce store is such an attractive option compared to many options out there!

I Figured out, there must be a reason why Wix is getting so much traction in the eCommerce space today.

Are you wondering, How you too could build an online store?

Learning how to build an online store from scratch can be a daunting task. We know how it feels as we were once in your shoes just a few short years ago.

We wanted to build an online store to kick start a side business with the dream of growing it into a full-time income.

But when it came down to actually getting the ball rolling, we had absolutely no clue where to get started!

Now I must admit..

I have no appetite for learning new skills every time i have to use technology to earn money online. And I would like to think that you too are pretty much the same?

But here is the good news..

With Wix website builder, I feel confident anyone who can use Microsoft word, would string together an ecommerce site using Wix’s WYSIWYG site builder.

You probably have also been tempted to hire a professional web designer to help you build your web store. The reality is they can be expensive even if you had all the money to spend, pouring your sweat and soul into building your own Wix eCommerce store is the most fulfilling adventure you could possibly take.

Fear of failure can be self-deprecating in a way, wondering and feeling overwhelmed and pretty much paralyzed from all the jargon technology throws at us. This can hinder newbies from moving forward and taking decisive actions:

  • Should we use PayPal?
  • What other options are there?
  • How should we price our products?
  • What should our color scheme be for our brand?
  • What about the logo?
  • Which domain name should we get?
  • Where do we get customers? How do we use advertisements?
  • Do we need to hire a coder/designer to help us?
  • How to build an online store from scratch?
  • What is the best way to design my product pages?

Questions like these can send your head into a downward spiral.
            Luckily for you….,

with Wix, building an eCommerce store is pretty much easy.

This article is about debunking the myths behind the shiny object syndrome when building your eCommerce store

The Selling point or I should say Claims will tell you that Shopify is an all-in-one commercial system, where you pay a monthly fee to use the company’s web design, ecommerce and product management tools. It’s all packaged into one product, so you can simply choose a template, upload your products and start selling online. What they won’t tell you is that with a few add-ons your monthly store billing could jump from the initial $29.99 to almost $129 on average. And here’s why…

Shopify has a growing community of e-commerce developers who are constantly developing apps daily, and these apps are sold and promoted via Shopify marketplace.

Is that a bad thing to have a growing community of developers? Absolutely not. The trouble for me is when do the charges stop?

Pretty much every additional functionality you want they will add up to costs, with a start up e-commerce store, where your goal is to run on the lowest overheads possible, Shopify is not a better match.

Wix eCommerce, on the other hand, works differently in that it’s a plug and play that works magic with little efforts and at minimal and predictable costs.

Once you install your Wix template, all you need is a few tweaks to your e-commerce website.

It’s a wonderful website builder that gives you control in design as well as overheads from the time you set up your Wix ecommerce, to when you start fiddling with product and inventory management tools which easy to use.

Back in the day, setting up an ecommerce store took a lot of man hours as well as a lot of technical know-how.

Today, however, the landscape has completely changed with the coming in of drag and drop site builders like Wix ecommerce.

Frankly speaking, setting up an online store only takes a few minutes in between making children’s dinner and school runs if you are a parent like me.

With a few mouse clicks and a little typing, Wix site builder lets you set up your own store on the web.
Having said that, If you want to learn along how to set up or I should say how to build a Wix ecommerce store, then you will need a Wix FREE account Just sign up for their free web site and follow along our tutorial

Step One – Sign Up For Wix Account

Navigate to Wix website, and click on the Get Started button. You will need to keep your good email handy as Wix will send you all login details to this email, so make sure it is a good email.

Fill in your desired email address, password and store name.

Step Two – Customize the Look of Your Site

Customizing your website look is where the magic happens, here you can pick anything from blog layout to store sales funnels its all here…

Step Three – Add Products To Your Store

Adding store products is pretty much standard, with so many image layout options, you are in control of how you want your product to look like in you store.

Step Four- Setup Your Domain

Wix will let you use their subdomain name if you want to keep it that way, however it is always best practice to maintain professionalism when it comes to running an ecommerce store. And having your Wix store setup on it’s own domain accomplishes that with minimal efforts.
If you have no domain name registered, wix will registered it for you. This is the best option as it does not involve a whole lot of steps outside of wix.

However, if you already have a domain registered already, Wix will let you use that domain and have it connected to your Wix e-commerce store. There are a few steps to go through so that everything is properly connected.

The most common features will include:

  • Uploading logos
  • Uploading slides to a homepage carousel
  • Adding related item functionality to product pages
  • Choosing how many items appear on each line of the collection pages
  • Customizing and Picking Ideal Brand color schemes
  • Tweaking Fonts and a wide variety choice at your disposal.

Because Wix Template themes are built on top of a WYSIWYG, this will allow you to easily re position elements on pages such as showing product images on the left, right or center of the page.

You can also choose whether you want to display social links to encourage your customers to like/tweet/pin using social media buttons.

Step Five – Test And Launch Your Ecommerce Store

As a general rule of thumb, before your site can go live make sure to add a few more details about your company and how you plan to make deliveries and pay tax if you intend to charge and collect.

Many folks get this part all wrong, testing and testing won’t hurt but Makes sure that all your business information is filled out on the required pages.
It also in the interest of your business to make sure t Google Analytics is installed on your Wix site. This can prove to be an invaluable source for tracking your store’s visitors
